The Toddler Beach Packing List: Flying to Destin With a Little One

I put this together for a family flying to Destin with a 22-month-old on his first ever flight. Then I realised I'd been rebuilding the same list, from scratch, for every young family I book. So here it is properly, once, for everyone.

This is written for the Emerald Coast — Destin, Miramar Beach, Sandestin, 30A — where the sand is white, the water is warm, and the walk from the condo to the shore is short enough that you'll do it four times a day. It works just as well for any beach trip that starts with an early flight and a car seat.

The rule I pack by: bring the things you cannot buy at 9pm in an unfamiliar town, and buy the rest when you land. Sunscreen, snacks, water and sand toys are cheaper at the grocery store two minutes from your rental than they are shipped to your door.

Before you start tapping: the shopping links below are Amazon affiliate links. As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases. It costs you nothing extra, and it never changes what I recommend — if I wouldn't hand it to my own kid at a gate, it isn't on this list. 🤝

Before you pack 📝

Work out your real luggage allowance first, then pack to it. On most budget carriers that's one checked bag for the family, a carry-on each, and a diaper bag that doesn't count. That's your working space. Soft bags collapse and store; hard-shell suitcases will live in the walkway of a small condo all week.

Anything bulky can be rented instead. Crib, high chair, beach wagon, stroller, sound machine — baby gear rental companies deliver all of it to the door in most beach towns for a few dollars a day. It is almost always cheaper than checking a second bag, and infinitely cheaper than your back.

Getting through the airport 🛫

A 5:00 AM airport with a toddler is the hardest ninety minutes of the whole trip. These are the things that make it survivable.

01 · Ride-on toddler suitcase

The single best purchase for a first flight. They sit on it and you tow them through the terminal instead of carrying them, it holds their things, and many models convert into a legrest on the plane so they can stretch out and sleep. It replaces a stroller, a carry-on, and about four minutes of screaming per gate.

02 · Car seat travel cart

Straps your car seat to a rolling frame so you can wheel it through the terminal instead of carrying it on your hip. If the seat is going on the plane with you, this is what gets it from the curb to your row without wrecking your back. Folds flat into the overhead bin.

03 · 20,000mAh power bank

Budget carriers often have no seat power and no Wi-Fi — not a single USB port. Two phones and a tablet on a 5:00 AM departure will not survive to the coast on their own. Get one that charges two devices at once.

⚡ Buy this size, not a bigger one. 20,000mAh keeps you under the 100 watt-hour airline limit. Anything bigger needs airline approval and gets pulled at the checkpoint, no matter how good the deal looks. Three more rules the agents are enforcing this year: it rides in your bag or your lap, never a checked bag, never the overhead bin, and you can't recharge it in the air. If they ask to gate-check your carry-on, pull the power bank out first and keep it on you.

04 · Stuffable travel neck pillow

Stuff it with your clothes and you get a pillow and extra packing space out of the same object. It holds roughly a three-day trip's worth of soft items, which is one less bag to haul through the terminal.

05 · Seatback organizer

Hangs on the seat back and keeps everything within reach instead of buried in a bag overhead. It has a handle so it comes off the plane as its own little tote, and it doubles as a spot to hang headphones. Trust me — I once left my phone onboard trying to wrangle my kids' stuff, my husband's stuff and my own.

06 · Mini first aid kit

You never know what you forgot until you NEED it. Band-aids for blisters, Q-tips for after-shower cleanup, bug bite treatment — all in something small enough to live in the diaper bag.

07 · Water-drawing books and reusable stickers

The mess-free kind — the pen holds water, the pictures appear, then fade so it works again. Paired with a few reusable sticker scenes, this is twenty screen-free minutes per new item. Wrap two or three individually and hand them over one at a time; the unwrapping is half the entertainment. 🎁

More quiet-time winners for the same job:

Baby's first Gulf beach 🐚

Everything above gets you there. Everything below is what makes the beach itself work with someone who is two feet tall and has opinions.

08 · Pop-up beach tent with solar fan

Sets up in seconds, folds into a carry bag, and the built-in solar fan is the part everyone raves about. Real shade for naps or play, with enough room to spread out. This is the difference between a two-hour beach morning and a forty-minute one.

09 · Anti-lost wrist link

There are things I wish I'd known sooner, especially as a boy mom. Sometimes they just don't want to sit or be pushed around. This has been a lifesaver — I keep the key clipped to my side of the bracelet, and it gives them the freedom they're crying for while you're waiting on a table after a big day.

Air movement — my personal hill 🌬

I do not travel without a fan and I will not be talked out of it. The Emerald Coast in late summer runs in the high 80s with the humidity of a bathroom, and a moving toddler generates more heat than you'd believe.

10 · Clip-on rechargeable stroller fan

The one with bendable tripod legs, so it wraps around a stroller bar, a pram handle, a car headrest, a suitcase handle, or a beach chair. Rechargeable, three speeds, and quiet enough not to wake them. Buy two — one for the stroller and one that lives in the diaper bag. This is the item people thank me for most. 💨

11 · UPF 50+ long-sleeve swim set

Better than sunscreen because it doesn't wear off, doesn't need reapplying, and doesn't involve pinning down a toddler every ninety minutes. A long-sleeve rash guard and swim shorts covers most of them permanently. Buy two so one can dry.

12 · Mineral sunscreen — lotion and stick

Zinc-based, reef-safe, and gentle enough for toddler skin. This one is also formulated to help guard against jellyfish stings, which are a real thing on the Gulf. The stick is for the face, ears, and the tops of the feet — the three places everyone misses and everyone burns. Apply inside, fifteen minutes before you leave, never on the beach.

13 · Water shoes for sand and pool

Accidents happen and we're trying to prevent them. These are also a win for a texture-sensitive kid — no sand between the toes, and no struggling to walk. Gulf sand is coarser than it looks and it can hurt little feet the first time, especially over a long day.

14 · Mesh beach tote

Sand falls straight through instead of coming home with you and living in your rental all week. Big enough for towels, toys, and the tent, and it drains when you rinse the whole thing under the outdoor shower on the way back up.

15 · Cornstarch baby powder

The trick nobody tells first-timers: sprinkle it on damp sandy skin, wait a beat, brush it off, and the sand releases completely. Works on hands, feet, faces, and the backs of knees. Ten seconds and a dollar, and it's the difference between a clean toddler and a sandy car seat all week. 🪄

Making a small condo work 🏠

One room, one bathroom, and a small person who needs to be asleep at 7:00 PM while you are very much still awake.

16 · Rechargeable travel sound machine

Small, battery-powered, clips to a cot or a bag. Covers the balcony doors, the corridor, the elevator, and — crucially in a studio — the two of you talking on the other side of the room. Also works in the stroller at the beach and on the plane.

A few more from the tribe…

Optional extras that have saved me time and again, plus picks from my fellow travel specialists. It takes a village, and we've got yours!

Motion sickness patches — non-drowsy, for the grown-ups

Collapsible sand castle toy set with mesh bag

Vacuum bags with rechargeable pump — 12 pack

Reusable slider zipper food bags, expandable base

Hydration electrolyte gummies (adults)

4-in-1 retractable wall charger, 45W dual USB

Bluetooth tracker for keys, bags and the stroller

Hook-on portable high chair, 6–36 months

Things you already own — don't forget them 📋

Documents and money: photo ID for every adult · a credit card in the driver's name if you're renting a car, since most agencies won't take a debit card for the deposit · all your confirmation numbers in one place · insurance cards · your pediatrician's phone number

Health: children's acetaminophen and ibuprofen in the correct dose · a thermometer · band-aids · teething gel · any prescriptions in their original bottles · aloe gel

Easy to forget: a small overnight bag if you're staying near the airport the night before, packed so nobody opens the big suitcase at 9pm · a nightlight · the actual comfort object, and a backup if one exists · a laundry pod or two, because you'll want to rewash swimsuits · chargers for the rental · a cheap beach towel per person · sunglasses and a hat for the grown-ups too

Leave at home: the full stroller travel system, bring the umbrella stroller · more than two pairs of shoes each · anything white · a hair dryer, your rental has one · beach toys, buy six dollars of them when you land and leave them behind

Want the Destin version of this, for your actual trip? 🌊

I build these for the families I book — your condo, your flight, your kid's age, your luggage allowance. Plus the restaurants that will seat a toddler at 5pm and the beaches with the calmest water. Tell me your dates and I'll put it together.

If it's on this list, I've either travelled with it or watched a family be very glad they had it. If you only buy five things, make them the power bank, the clip-on fan, the pop-up beach tent, the sound machine, and the cornstarch powder.
